Huang Zhong, courtesy name Huang Hansheng, was a general of Liu Bei in the very late decades of the Eastern Han period (25-220 CE). He came from Nanyang (modern Nanyang, Henan) and was in the beginning Leader of the court gentlemen (zhonglangjiang) under Liu Biao.
When the mighty warlord Cao Cao conquered Jingzhou he was made acting assistant general (jiaxing pi jiangjun), but was soon convinced that Liu Bei was the right man to be supported. When Liu Bei conquered the Sichuan Basin Huang Zhong was made General challenging the barbarians (taolu jiangjun).
In 219 he secured the region of Hanzhong against Xiahou Yuan, a general of Cao Cao, who controlled the north. For this victory Huang Zhong was rewarded with the title of General Conquering the West (zhengxi jiangjun), and when Liu Bei adopted the title of King of Hanzhong, was given the title General of the Rear (hou jiangjun) and was enfoeffed as Marquis within the Pass (guanneihou). His posthumous title is Marquis Gang.
