Choice Of Companions
By WilliamMakepeace Thayer
1.A good companion is better than afortune , for a fortune cannot purchase those elements of character which makecompanionship a blessing . The best companion is one who is wiser and betterthan ourselves , for we are inspired by his wisdom and virtue to nobler deeds .
2."Keep good company , and you shallbe one of the number ,"said George Herbert . "A man is known by the company he keeps . "Character makes character in theassociations of life faster than anything else . This fact makes the choice ofcompanions in early life more important even than that of teachers andguardians .
3.Companionship is education , goodor bad ; it develops manhood or womanhood , high or low ; it lifts the soulupward or drags it downward ; it ministers to virtue or vice . Sow virtue , andthe harvest will be virtue . Sow vice , and the harvest will be vice . Goodcompanions help us to sow virtue ; evil companions help us to sow vice .
William MakepeaceThayer
