Percy Gilbert is a top-endfashion designer from the UK.
Track one
Suits for the politicians andthe business people
You had companieslike ‘Shepard’s and Anderson’ who designed for Prince Charles
That’s what it was – it was allabout being a gentleman and how you presented yourself
It was a real lifestyle – formof communicating who you are
Fashion changed in Britain
It was really in the ‘60’s withbrands like Ben Sherman, the whole Portobello Road and Carnaby Street
That movement that took off –and the whole Mod movement really shaped British fashion
The Beatles in their skinnysuits with their hair
The whole colourful shirt thing– my old teacher – he had a shop on King’s Road – his name was StephenKing - he became quite famous in dressing people in brightpsychedelic shirts
It was a whole lifestyle –people really bought into and lived
How do you train somebody to bea designer?
I remember telling my teacherat school I wanted to apply for London School of Fashion – and started doingall this drawing
There was something naturallythere with me
It worked and I got in
They try and build up yourskills, build up your understanding
There is a lot to fashiondesigning that I think a lot of people do not understand
It involves society
And when you work for bigcompanies it involves the economy, what’s happening – it can even involvepolitics
I worked across both men’s andwomen’s wear
Studied women’s wear at LondonCollege of Fashion and menswear in Sussex.
Track Two
I managed to work with a veryfamous designer Alexander McQueen
He was very successful, verytalented designer
Even although I was doing a mensweardegree, when I met him I worked on women’s wear
Once you know how to design youcan design pretty much anything
When I was a student I met himduring Graduate Fashion Week and I said I would really love to work for you
He took me really seriously andgave me this metal business card
I sent in my CV and next weekthey called me in “Please work on a piece with one of our designers’ for ‘Daysand Confused’ magazine.
And then it just grew fromthere – a piece went into the V&A Museum
Fashion has a lot of tension, alot of pressure – it is a very competitive industry
Working with Alexander McQueen– we had a similar background- he was from the East End there was justsomething about us, we just clicked
Other students were very scaredof him – he was very strict
They invited me to Givenchy inParis
I worked on one of the maincouture collections
I also worked all night withMcQueen and another guy, who at the time I did not realise who he was
The day before the show we wentto the venue in a taxi
We worked the whole night- wewere drinking some champagne at the same time
It was only in the morning thatI realised who I had been talking with
The guy said “My name isPhilip”
“You are a hat designer – areyou Philip Tracy?”
