As already noted, 40 years ago, MargaretThatcher became Prime Minister. During her premiership, she convinced peoplelike me and people frommodest backgroundsright across the country thatit is the Conservative party that is the party of opportunity and aspiration.Does the Prime Minister agree that education plays a pivotal role in unlockingthese opportunities and enablingsocial mobility, andwill educationand skills funding receive the attention it therefore deserves in the upcomingspending round? The Prime Minister
Of course, we are already putting recordlevels of funding into our schools—£43.5 billion. My hon. Friend is tryingtotempt me to talk aboutthe spending review that is upcoming, but I canassure him that we are committed to improving education for every child, because I absolutely passionately believe that we should be making sure thathowfar a child goes in lifedepends not on their background, theircircumstances or who their parents are, but on their individual talents andtheir hard work.Everybody in this country should be able to go as far astheir talents and their hard work will take them.
