Once upon a time there were two children who lived next door to each other in a big city, crowded with houses and people. They shared a tiny garden made of a window box, where a rose bush bloomed until winter froze it away.

Not far away there was an evil hobgoblin, who had a magic mirror. Everything beautiful that it reflected looked ugly, while hideous things looked wonderful.

The hobgoblin flew into the sky with his mirror, but it slipped from his hands and smashed into millions of sharp splinters. They fell on the earth below.
这个妖怪带着他的镜子飞向天空，但是镜子从他的手里滑落，碎成了无数片锋利的碎片，然后飞到地上。
One wintry night, the boy, Kay, looked out of his window. Amid the whirling snow he saw a tall woman, graceful and beautiful, who beckoned to him. But she was made of shining, glittering ice. He was frightened, and hid under his warm blankets.
一个寒冬夜晚，一个叫加伊的男孩向窗外望去。在飘飞的雪花中他看到了一个高大，优雅美丽的女人，她向凯招了招手。但这个女人是由闪闪发亮的冰雪做成的。加伊害怕极了，躲到了自己暖和的毯子里。
Next summer, the rosebush bloomed again, and the girl, Gerda, sang a song beside it. “when roses bloom so sweetly in the vale, the Snow Queen’s evil power at last will fail.”
第二年的夏天，玫瑰花又盛开了，一个叫格尔达的女孩，在花丛旁唱了一首歌。“当玫瑰在山谷中美丽地绽放，白雪皇后的邪恶力量终将消亡。”
As Kay played nearby, he suddenly cried out in pain. ”Oh something hurt my heart! And there’s something in my eye!” Gerda tried to comfort him.
加伊在附近玩耍时，突然痛哭起来。“啊，有什么东西钻进了我心里，而且有东西飞进了我眼睛里！”格尔达试图安慰加伊。
They did not know that the splinters of the evil mirror had pierced him, and would soon turn his heart to ice. As time passed, Kay grew cruel and rude, and shunned his former playmate.
但他们不知道是魔镜的碎片刺伤了加伊，不久之后他的心就会变成冰块。随着时间慢慢过去，加伊开始变得残忍和粗鲁，还躲着以前的玩伴。
One day he was riding his sled when he saw a magnificent white sleigh arrive. “That will go much faster than my sled!” he thought, and jumped on the back. But the sleigh took off - faster and faster - flying though the snow. Kay was terrified.

Finally it stopped and the driver stood up and turned to him. A tall figure, wearing a white fur coat and a cap made of snow. It was the Snow Queen. “Are you trembling from cold?” she asked him.

She kissed his forehead and for a moment he felt as though he was dying. Then he felt comfortable, and realized he no longer felt the cold. The Snow Queen kissed him again, And he forgot Gerda, his parents and his home.
皇后吻了加伊的额头，有那么一会儿，加伊觉得自己要死了。然后他感觉很舒服，不再感到寒冷。皇后又亲吻了他，他忘记了格尔达，父母和自己的家。
They flew away over forests and lakes, over many a land and sea. Below them the wind blew cold and wolves howled. But up above, the moon shone bright and large, and Kay fixed his eyes on it throughout the long winter night. By day he slept at the feet of the Snow Queen.

Back home, Gerda searched everywhere for Kay. The snow melted and spring came, but there was no sign of him. So Gerda set off from her home to find him.

Her journey first took her to a witch, who lived in an enchanted flower garden. The witch wanted to keep Gerda, and cast a spell of forgetfulness.
在旅途中，她首先遇到了一个住在魔法花园的女巫。女巫想留住格尔达，对她施了一个遗忘咒语。
But the witch was worried that her roses might remind the girl of Kay. So she pointed her crooked stick and they sank down into the black earth.
但是女巫担心她种的玫瑰可能会让女孩想起加伊，于是她用自己的魔法棒对准玫瑰丛，让它们沉入了地下。
Held under a spell, Gerda stayed there. But one day a sadness came into her heart, and her tears fell onto the earth, awakening the rosebush. As it bloomed before her, Gerda suddenly remembered everything.
格尔达因为被下咒，在女巫的花园呆了一段时间。但是有一天，她的心头涌入一阵悲伤，眼泪落到地上，唤醒了玫瑰丛。当玫瑰在她面前盛开，格达突然想起了一些事情。
“Kay isn’t dead, “the roses told her.” We have been down in the earth where the dead people are, but Kay is not there.”

A crow flew into the garden. “I think I have seen Kay,” he said. “He’s now a prince, married to a princess in this very kingdom.”

Gerda went to visit the royal palace. But although the prince looked like Kay, it was not him. The princess was moved by Gerda’s plight, and gave her a golden carriage to help her with her journey.

The carriage rolled on into a dark forest, where it was soon surrounded by robbers. They seized the horses and killed the coachman, and dragged poor Gerda out. “How tender she looks!” they cried. “What a dainty dish she will be!”
当马车驶入了一片黑暗森林，很快就被一群强盗包围了。他们抢走了马，杀死了马车夫，然后把可怜的格尔达从车厢里拖了出来。“看看她多可爱啊。”强盗们喊道，“她一定可以做成一道美味的菜。”
They kept her to fatten her up for their cooking pot, but a young robber girl took pity on her. Her name was Bae and she had a pet reindeer.
强盗把格尔达关起来，想把她养胖了再吃。但是有一个年轻的女强盗很同情格尔达，她的名字叫裴，她还有一只宠物驯鹿。
That night, while the robbers danced around their fire, some wood pigeons flew by. “Coo-roo! We have seen Kay,” they told Gerda. “He flew away with the Snow Queen, to Lapland.”
那天晚上，当强盗们围着篝火跳舞时，一些斑尾鸽飞了过来。“咕--咕！我们看见加伊了。”鸽子们告诉格尔达，“他和白雪皇后一起飞到了拉普兰德去了。”
Bae’s reindeer spoke. “The Snow Queen only lives in Lapland in summer. Her stronghold is a castle near the North Pole, on the island called Spitzbergen.”

So Gerda travelled north on the reindeer’s back. First she came to the hut of the Lapp woman, who was cooking fish over a whale-oil lamp. “The Snow Queen is hundred of miles to the north,” the Lapp woman told her.
于是格尔达骑着驯鹿一路向北走去。她来到一个拉普女人家的小屋，这个女人正用一盏鲸鱼油灯烤鱼。“白雪皇后住在往北一百英里的地方。”拉普女人告诉格尔达。
Gerda travelled on to the hut of the Finn woman, who had mystical knowledge. While Gerda slept the Finn woman spoke to the reindeer. “Little Kay has splinters of glass in his heart and his eye. He will not be human until they are removed,” she said.
格尔达来到一个芬兰女人的小屋，这个女人拥有很多神秘的知识。当格尔达睡觉时，芬兰女人在和驯鹿说话。“加伊的心里和眼睛里都有玻璃的碎片。只有把碎片清除掉他才会变回真正的人。”
“Can’t you give Gerda a magic spell to give her more power than the Snow Queen?” the reindeer asked.

“No power that I could give her could be as the innocence of her own heart. Don’t you see how wise men and beasts are compelled to serve her, and how far she has come?” the wise old Finn woman said.
“任何我给她的咒语都没有她纯善的心灵强大。她走了这么远，你看不出来那些如此聪明的男人和野兽都甘心为她服务吗？”这个聪明的芬兰老妇人说。
Gerda and the reindeer rode on to the Snow Queen’s castle. It was defended by monstrous soldiers formed of snowflakes. They looked like snakes, bears and porcupines.
格尔达骑上驯鹿来到了白雪皇后的城堡。城堡由一些凶恶的冰雪士兵守护着，它们有的像蛇，有的像熊，有的像豪猪。
But Gerda said a prayer, and her frozen breath turned into angels who melted the snowflakes away.

The walls of the castle were made of snowdrifts, and its vast, empty halls were lit by the flare of the Northern Lights. In the centre was a frozen lake, where the Snow Queen sat with Kay at her feet.
城堡的墙壁是由冰雪建成的，巨大而空旷的大厅被北极光照的闪闪发亮。在大厅的中央有一个冰冻的湖，冰雪女王和加伊都坐在中央。
Kay was nearly blue with the cold, though he did not feel it, as his heart had nearly turned to ice. “I am going to visit volcanoes in the hot countries,” the Snow Queen told him, and flew away.

Gerda found Kay there alone, stiff and still, nearly frozen to death. She threw her arms around him and her warm tears fell over him, going straight to his heart. They burned away the icy splinter there.
格尔达发现加伊一个人坐在那里，僵硬而呆滞，几乎快被冻死了。格尔达伸出双手抱住加伊，她温暖的眼泪落在加伊身上，直接流进他的心里，融化了冰冷的碎片。
“When roses bloom so sweetly in the vale, the Snow Queen’s evil power at last will fail,” Gerda sang. Kay cried out in happiness: “My beloved Gerda, where have you been for so long? And where have I been? How cold and empty it is here.”
“当玫瑰在山谷中美丽地绽放，白雪皇后的邪恶力量终将消亡。”格尔达唱道。加伊喜极而泣地喊道：“我亲爱的格尔达，你这么久到哪去了？我现在在哪？这里好空旷好冷啊！”
Hand in hand they left the wintry castle. As they journeyed south the bitter wind died down and the sun shone out. Green buds were all around them in the forest, and bird sang.
他们手拉手离开了寒冷的城堡。当他们往南前行时，凛冽的寒风逐渐停了下来，太阳也出来了。森林里绿芽满布，鸟儿欢唱。
As Kay and Gerda reached home, they had forgotten the Snow Queen, as though she was nothing but a bad dream. Everything seemed just as it was. But when they entered the door, they realized they were no longer children, but grown up.
当加伊和格尔达到家时，他们已经忘记了白雪皇后，好像她只不过是一个噩梦。一切看起来和以前一样。但是当他们走进门，他们意识到他们不再是小孩子，而是大人了。
So they sat by their rose bush, grown-up, but still children at heart. And it was summer, warm, glorious summer.
于是他们坐在玫瑰花丛旁，虽然已经长大了，但他们仍有一颗童心。温暖，光芒四射的夏天也来了。
