[WHO Plans Vaccine Technology Transfer Hub in South Africa]
The World Health Organization said yesterday that over 2.5 million COVID-19 cases and 64,000 deaths were reported globally last week.
The newly confirmed cases had been declining worldwide for eight straight weeks, and fatality rates had been declining for seven weeks in a row. In Africa, however, newly reported cases and deaths last week increased by about 40%. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the WHO is setting up a technology transfer hub for producing mRNA vaccines in South Africa, and has invited Pfizer and Moderna to join. The hub will be able to manufacture vaccines in 9 months at the earliest. The WHO said that the coronavirus Delta variant has been detected in 92 countries. The Delta variant is highly contagious and can even decrease the antibody count in those that have been vaccinated, however the current vaccines are still able to prevent severe symptoms and reduce deaths.
