“The thing that I wanted... was success,”he told the BBC.His motivation was not,he said,to get rich, but to continue to be seen as a success. When his first trading mistake threatened that perception,he started down the path that was going to lead him all the way to a Singaporean jail cell.He had no way of knowing that's where it was going to end, but as soon as he took that first step, there was no longer a boundary where it suddenly made sense to turn around. The next step is always a small one, and given what you've already done, why stop now? Leeson described the feeling of walking down this dark road:“[I] wanted to shout from the rooftops... this is what the situation is, there are massive losses, I want it to stop. But for some reason you're unable to do it.”
That is the peril of marginal thinking, of doing something just this once, of only applying your rules most of the time. You can't. I'm sure Leeson could have imagined the consequences of owning up to his initial mistake, painful though they might have been. The costs of taking the high road are always clear like that. But the costs of taking the low road-the one Leeson took- don't seem that bad at the start. There is no way Leeson could have imagined that covering up that one small mistake would result in his losing everything he valued in his life— his freedom, his marriage, and his career. But that's exactly what ended up happening.
