  History with its flickering（闪烁，摇曳） lamp stumbles(踌躇，蹒跚) along the trail of the past,trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive（复兴） its echoes, and kindle（点燃） with pale gleams the passion of former days.

  As the great scroll of history unrolls, manycomplicated incidents occur which it is difficult to introduce effectively intothe pattern of the likes and dislikes of the epoch in which we live.

  The human story does not always unfold like amathematical calculation（算式） on the principle that two andtwo make four. Sometimes in life they make five or minus three; and sometimesthe blackboard topples（倾倒，倒塌） down in the middle of the sumand leaves the class in disorder and the pedagogue（教师，教员） with a black eye.

  Science, which now offers us a golden agewith one hand, offers at the same time with the other the doom if all that wehave built up by inch since the Stone Age and the dawn of any human animals. Myfaith is in the high progressive destiny of man. I do not believe that we areto be flung back into abysmal（深不可测的，极度的） darkness if fiercesome（猛烈的） discoveries which human genius has made letus make sure that they are our servants, but not our masters.

Those who are thus sacrilegious（该受天谴的，亵渎神明的） will suffer and be punished, for their ownweapons will be turned against them.
