We all probably think that we know a bit about honeybees. We know that honeybees are black and yellow, and they make … well, honey. We also know that honeybees sting when they feel threatened. And most of us probably know that when they do sting, they die (unlike wasps). But there’s also so much more to learn about our little striped friends!
Honeybees are given different responsibilities to perform. Some are “workers,”while others are “drones.” The most important bee is the queen. She is the mother of all the bees in the colony, and she chooses the gender of each bee before laying eggs!
Female bees are the workers. These are the bees that we see most often.Their jobs are to collect food, build and protect the hive, and keep it clean.The male bees are drones. Their most important job is to mate with queen bees.If successful, they die.
