Addressing sexual harassment effectively requires both understanding its definition and recognizing its signs. Imagine this: Mary is focused on her phone and unexpectedly someone touches her hair. Turning around, she finds her classmate,John, laughing. Was this just a playful act or something more? Sexual harassment chiefly involves unwelcome actions that violate someone’s personal boundaries and autonomy. Even seemingly harmless actions such as John’s touch can upset the recipient.
Beyond direct physical actions, sexual harassment can manifest itself as inappropriate comments or the sharing of images and jokes with sexual meanings. Another clear example is “quid pro quo.” Someone may suggest offering a raise or promotion in exchange for sexual acts or other personal favors.Encountering such offers often indicates sexual harassment.
