Hello, everyone, this is Sara. Welcome to Ted Notes, made by 爱学英语ILearn English.
I’m here today to talk about the two ideas those are kind ofthe core, or the key leverage[1] points for learning. And it’s the idea ofmastery[2],and the idea of mindset[3].
In a traditional academic[4] model, we group studentstogether, usually by age and perceived[5]ability, and we shepherd[6] themall together at the same pace. They get scores in the regular exams and arepushed to the next subject even though there are still knowledge gaps left. Andall the way until at the some point, they hit the wall[7] on class because of the accumulated[8]gaps. What was really broken was that we were artificially[9]constraining[10] how long we had to do something, such as tests.
But the idea of mastery learning is to do the exact opposite. What’s variable is when and how long a students actually has to work onsomething, and what’s fixed is that they actually master the material. Everystudent would be on their own track[11]. Nowadays, we have tools to do it.Students see an explanation at their own time and pace. Or there’s on-demandvideo for that. Therefore, the whole idea of mastery-based learning and itsconnection to mindset can help students get deeper mastery over the material.
