I still remember it was a sunny Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City. Myfather was taking his two little boys to play miniature golf (迷你高尔夫). He walked up to the person at the ticketcounter (售票柜台) and said, “Howmuch is it to get in?”
The young man answered, “$3 for you and $3 for any kid who is older than 6. Welet them in free if they are 6 or younger. How old are they?”
My father said, “The younger one is 3 and the older one is 7.”
The man at the ticket counter said, “Hey, Mister, did you just win the lottery(彩票) or something? You could save yourselfthree dollars. You could tell me that the older one was 6; I wouldn’t know thedifference.” My father replied, “Yes, that might be true, but the kids wouldknow the difference.”
He was right. I did learn the difference. My father paid the full price for myticket – as well as taught me an important lesson.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hearwhat you’re saying.” In times when ethics (道德) are more important than ever, make sure you set a good example foreveryone around you.
