Dear friends,before you coming to Hangzhou,you may have heard the famous remark "there is a paradise in heaven and there are Suzhou and Hangzhou on earth".In fact,the analogy between Hangzhou and paradise on earth is largely because of West Lake.there is a saying"There are altogether 36 West Lakes in China,but the one in Hangzhou is the best".
West lake covering an area of 6.4 squear kilometers. But about 2500 years ago,West Lake was not a lake，just a shallow bay.Around 1600 years ago it became finally separated from the area and over the next hundred years it changed into freshwater lake due to rainwater and water from the surrouding moutains.Since then,West Lake has been lucky.For centuries,there have always been people giving it every possible and timely care.Among them,the three persons who have contributed most dredging of West Lake are Bai Juyi,Sushi and Yang Mengying.In order to make West Lake more colorful and dazzling,Hangzhou municipal goverment made important decisions to start the implementation of comprehensive protection project for West Lake in 2002.It took six years to complete the projects,over 150 historic and cultural attractions have been reconstructed and restored.
There are a lot of beautiful sceneries around West Lake,now let’s have a look.
The first stop to appreciate the West Lake is the Su Causeway.This causeway, decorated with red peach blossoms and green tender leaves of the willow trees,is 2.8 kilometres in length. On both sides of the causeway, there is a variety of flowers and trees planted,among which willow trees and peach trees are the most famous.There are also six stone arch bridges on the causeway,so there is a popular saying“the West Lake's scene includes the six stone arch bridges, the peach trees and the willow trees are planted alternately on the Su Causeway.”The Su Causeway boasts different scenery in different seasons.Especially in the spring, the scenery here is undoubtedly the most fascinating.Due to its unique geographical location,the willow trees on the causeway sprout earlier than those in other parts of the West Lake scenic area.As a result, it has become the messenger of nature and the first to tell people the coming of spring.Therefore,“Spring Dawn at the Su Causeway” has become the first of the Top Ten Views of the West Lake.
Speaking of the Su Causeway, we have to mention the Northern Song Dynasty's literary giant Su Dongpo. He was a native of Meishan in Sichuan Province and was one of the greatest poets and writers in the Song Dynasty. He was also a famous calligrapher, painter, politician and gastronome. organized 200,000 labourers to dredge the West Lake.And then he used the silt to build the causeway connecting the north bank and south bank. Mr. Su left Hangzhou not only a lake and a causeway, but also a dish. named this dish as “Dongpo Pork”.
The Solitary Hill.Located between the North Inner Lake and the Outer Lake, the Solitary Hill Scenic Area has been famous since the Tang and Song Dynasties.It is a place of cultural relics and the essence of the West Lake.Because the emperor claimed to be the solitary man,this has become one of the reasons why the hill is named the Solitary Hill.
Bai Causeway,Dear friends, the most outstanding scenic parts of West Lake are "the three causeway".The one in front us is the famous Bai Causeway.It has a total length of 1 Kilometer.Bai Causeway formerly known as "Baisha causeway",was famous due to its exquisite scenery one thousand years ago in the Tang Dynasty.But exactly who built the causrway is a mystery.Now we are on Bai Causeway.The beautiful scenery of West Lake all around us.Look south,you can see a pagoda,that is the famous Leifeng pagoda; look nouth,The one located on Baoshi hill is Baochu pagoda. people say that "Leifeng Pagoda looks like a monk and Baochu pagoda looks like a lady. as you can see,There are two bridges ,the one in the middle of Bai Causewau is Jindai bridge,the one joins the Beishan Road is Broken Bridge which looks abuslutly good,But why is it called the Broken Bridge? The most popular answer is this:A pavilion was built on the broken bridge.When it snowed in winter,the snow on the sunny side would melt first while the shady side was still covered with snow and ice.viewed from Geling hill,the bridge appeared to break off from the causeway and so was named "Lingering Snow on the Broken Bridge" which is one of the top ten views of west lake. The Leifeng Pagoda is located on the Xizhao Hill on the south bank of the West Lake. It. was firstly erected from 975 to 977 AD. It was named “Huangfei Pagoda" by Qian Hongchu, king of the Wuyue Kingdom, in order to worship the sacred Buddha relics,and to celebrate the birth of his first son by his favourite concubine, Huangfei. Because the peak under the pagoda is called “Lei Feng” gradually the pagoda has become known as the “Leifeng Pagoda”.
Three Islands in the Lake.People often compare the three islands of Mid-lake Pavilion, Ruangong Islet and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon in the West Lake to the three fairy mountains in ancient times - Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou.
The Mid-lake Pavilion is both the name of the pavilion and the name of the island.It was built the earliest among the three islands.The Ruangong Islet is the youngest man-made island in the West Lake.After the West Lake was listed in the World Heritage Site, the Ruangong Islet was no longér open to visitors. It has become an uninhabited islet and a paradise for birds.Among all the Top Ten Views of the West Lake, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon can best represent Hangzhou City. The image of the three little stone pagodas on the south of the island can not only be found everywhere in Hangzhou but also is printed on the back of a one-yuan note.
The most representative scenery is the three stone pagodas on the water to the south of the island. Each tower is 2 metres high,with 5 small round holes on its spherical body.The top of the pagoda is shaped like a gourd,looking graceful. At the Mid-Autumn moon night,people used to light candles in the pagodas covering the holes with thin paper.When seen through the paper the candlelight.looked like numerous moons reflected in the lake.Can you calculate how many moons there are at that time?You might say 32,but the correct answer is 33.So where is the other moon? As the saying goes:“On festive occasions more than ever we think of our dear ones far away,and the moon is on behalf of our hearts”, šo the last one is the moon in our heart.
Hangzhou is the ark of human nature and the West Lake is the home of all of us.We cannot describe the West Lake by a few words, we cannot fully understand it by visiting once or twice.It is believed that every time you come and visit her, you will be moved by her and have a new harvest!
