Tiantai Scenic Area in Taizhou
Ladies and Gentlemen,Welcome to the Tiantai Mountain Scenic Area.I’m your local guide. My name is Jack. First, let me give you a brief introduction to Tiantai Mountain.
Tiantai mountain is located in Tiantai County,in the middle of the eastern part of Zhejiang Province. It borders Ningbo, Shaoxing,Jinhua and Wenzhou. In 1992,Tiantai Mountain was listed as one of the Top Ten tourist attractions in Zhejiang Province.
It was rated as a national 5A tourist attraction in 2015.Tiantai Mountain is renowned for its “beautiful landscape and authentic Buddhism”. In the area, there are more than a dozen scenic spots. Among them the Guoqing temple, the Shiliang waterfall and Huading temple are the best. This morning, we will visit two of them, the Guoqing Temple and the Shiliang Waterfall.
The Guoqing Temple is a Buddhist temple on the Tiantai Mountain. It is located about 220 kilometers from Hangzhou. In 598, following the last wish of a master monk, the emperor of the Sui Dynasty had Guoqing Temple built on the Tiantai Mountain. The Guoqing Temple is one of the most important Buddhist temples in China. As for the building of the temple, there is a story.
In the Sui Dynasty, Master Zhiyi created a new sect of Mahayana Buddhism. He wanted to build a new temple as the ancestral temple. But due to financial difficulty, the construction of the temple did not start until it was too late for him, because he died without seeing the beginning of it. So, before he died,he wrote“without seeing the construction of the temple, I'm dying with sorrow". When the emperor saw the last wish of the master monk, he was touched and decided to fulfil the monk's wish.
Therefore, a temple was built here. It was originally named Tiantai Temple and later changed to Guoping Temple. The temple became the ancestral temple of the new Buddhist sect created by Master Zhiyi. Since the founder of the sect had lived on the Tiantai Mountain for a long time, the new sect was named Tiantai Sect. It is the first Chinese Buddhist sect evolved from the original Buddhism after it was introduced to China. This temple is the site where the Chinese Buddhism formally branched away from the original Buddhist teachings in India.
It is also from here that the Tiantai sect of Buddhism spread to both Korea and Japan during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD).In the Tang Dynasty, a large number of Japanese diplomats came to China. In 804, an eminent Japanese monk came with the diplomats. He was introduced to Guoqing Temple on the Tiantai Mountain to learn the doctrine of Tiantai Sect. One year later, he returned to Japan and created the Japanese Tendai Buddhism. Therefore, the Guoqing Temple is also the cradle of the Tendai Buddhism in Japan.
In the long history, the temple has been destroyed by either wars or storms many times. But each destruction was followed by a renovation or reconstruction. The most comprehensive renovation took place during the reign of Yongzheng Emperor in the Qing Dynasty (1722–1735).
In the 1960s during the Cultural Revolution,it was once again destroyed. In 1972, the Japanese Prime Minister paid a visit to China, the Chinese government attached much importance.During the visit, the prime minister proposed a personal request to Premier Zhou Enlai. He wanted to pay his homage to the Guoqing Temple because it was the cradle of Tendai Buddhism in Japan. It turned out that the prime minister's mother was a faithful follower of Tendai Buddhism. She asked the prime minister to pay a homage to Guoqing Temple for her before he left for China.
After receiving the prime minister's request, premier Zhou Enlai made inquiries to the relevant departments of Zhejiang province. However, he was told that the Guoqing Temple couldn't receive the Japanese prime minister as it had been in disrepair for many years.Zhou Enlai had to tell him that the Guoqing Temple was under renovation. But he promised that once the renovation was finished,he would invite the prime minister to visit the temple. The prime minister left with pity but hope.
After the prime minister left,Zhou Enlai asked to start the renovation of the Guoqing Temple immediately and required that the renovation should be finished by 1975.So,a special committee was set up and the work was started immediately. They were making all efforts to find the lost Buddha statues and other articles. In the meantime, 300,000 yuan was received from the central government for the renovation and large numbers of Buddha statues and other Buddhist articles were moved from Beijing to the temple. With the efforts of the workers,Guoqing Temple's renovation was completed as scheduled. As premier Zhou Enlai promised, in 1975,the first delegation of Japanese guests was invited to visit the temple.
Ladies and gentlemen, now we have come to the first hall of Guoqing Temple. It is the Maitreya Hall. It is also called the entrance hall. Maitreya Buddha is sitting in the middle of the hall and laughing from ear to ear. He is believed to be the successor of Sakyamuni Buddha. At the back of Maitreya Buddha, there stands Skanda. He is the only statue facing Sakyamuni in the temple. He was also the first Bodhisattva who vowed to guard the Buddha’s relics forever. Therefore, he is regarded as the guardian of the temple.
The statue of Skanda, probably made in the Ming Dynasty weights 1.5 tons and is a state-level cultural relic. He is holding a pestle in his hands, and put his both palms together. This means the temple provides accommodation for the monks who travel to this temple from other temples. In almost all Maitreya Halls,Maitreya and Skanda are always one behind the other.
The former is welcoming all visitors with a laughing face while the latter is watching people leaving with a stern face, making sure that they do nothing against the Buddhist rules.
Ladies and gentlemen, let's move on to the second hall, the Grand Hall of the temple. As you can see, sitting in the middle of the Grand Hall is a huge statue. It is one of the treasures moved from Beijing during the renovation. It is a statue of Sakyamuni of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). According to the size, can you guess the weight of the statue? Right, it is very heavy. It is as heavy as 13 tons. You can imagine, back at that time in China, it was by no means an easy job to move such a huge and heavy thing from Beijing to this temple. On the two sides of the hall are the statues of the 18 Arhats. They are gilded wood statues made in the Yuan Dynasty. An Arhat is the highest attainment of a Buddhist in Hinayana Buddhism. It is said that before his nirvana, Sakyamuni appointed Arhats to spread the dharma, give relief and help all human beings in the world. Among them, one deserves some special mentioning. Please look at this one. He is called the Taming Dragon Arhat. What makes it special? There was a very popular monk in the Southern Song Dynasty called Ji Gong, or the Crazy Monk. He was said to be the reborn of the Taming Dragon Arhat. He was born here in Tiantai and converted himself to Buddhism at Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou. He acted crazily but always help the poor and against the rich. There are many stories about him all over Zhejiang and people love hearing them. I’ll tell you some when we have time.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have to leave the temple for our next destination, the Shiliang Waterfall Scenic Area. It is also something you shall not miss.
Ladies and gentlemen,Tiantai Mountain has a lot more to offer. But due to the limit of time, we have to stop here today. Before we go back to our bus,I’d like to give you just a few minutes to take some photos.Thank you very much for your listening.
