Wuzhen Ancient Town Scenic Area of Tongxiang,Jiaxing City
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to “China's Last Riverine Town”-Wuzhen! In 2003 TV series “Time Passes like Flowing Water”made Wuzhen known to the whole world for the first time. It may not be found on the map, but it is probably the most suitable place for love and poems in the world. After seeing landscapes elsewhere in China, you may be surprised by this little water town, so please follow my steps and let’s find out why.
Wuzhen is located in the north end of Tongxiang City,Zhejiang Province, in the center of the rich Hangjiahu Plain. It is an ancient town with thousands years of history and the hometown of Mr. Mao Dun, a brilliant writer. It is wellknown for its small bridges, flowing water and riverine houses as a unique water village.
Dating back to Spring and Autumn Period, it was originally called Wushu. Since then, the place name “Wu” has not changed for more than two thousand years. Regarding the origin of the word “Wu” in Wuzhen, some people think that it may be the land soil that is black, so the previous name here was “Wudun Town”, and it was not changed to"Wuzhen" until the Song Dynasty in order to avoid offending the emperor’s name.
However, the local people prefer another kind of emotional interpretation: according to the legend, during the Tang Dynasty, General Wu Zan sacrificed here to calm down the rebellion. People built a General Wu Temple for him, so the town got the name after his family name.
In history, the development of Wuzhen enjoyed two peaks. The prosperity of the Grand Canal brought Wuzhen the first success.Relying on water trade, Wuzhen became a well-known silk town and home of fish and rice. Business was prosperous here and celebrities gathered in large numbers whose efforts and achievements once made Wuzhen famous throughout the ages.
Basically, this scenic place is divided into two parts, namely Dongzha (east part) and Xizha (west part).
Ladies and gentlemen, now we are already inside the Dongzha Scenic Area that was officially opened on January 1, 2001.
Right in front of us is a picture of the traditional Jiangnan water town living on the river. The houses in Wuzhen are always facing the street with rivers at back, which is the basic local architecture style, and water is the true soul of Wuzhen culture. Many people still live here today. It can be seen that the development of Wuzhen not only protects the living water but also preserves the traditional life, making Wuzhen a“living ancient town".
Please take a look at this interesting boat, where a thick bamboo pole is standing. This is Wuzhen's Tall Pole Boat, also called Silkworm Boat. This is part of the ceremony facilities to celebrate silk harvest. Not far from the boat is Fengyuan Double Bridges that looks rather outstanding. Wuzhen is a water town, so there are many bridges. Here you can also see a bridge with a unique shape. It is made up of two bridges with the meaning of being able to achieve success one way or another. Thus it is called “Fengyuan Double Bridges”. It is also called a covered bridge because of the covered shed above it.
Walking for five minutes along the Dongshi River, we can reach the Hundred Bed Museum, which is one of the highlights of the water town. The former owner of this large structure was a silk businessman with the surname Zhao, so it is also called Zhao Family Hall. The construction of the large ancient house is on the one hand for the centralized protection and exhibition of the Ming and Qing ancient beds; on the other hand, it is also aimed to better popularize bed culture, which is relatively private.
Now we have come to the Mao Dun Memorial Hall. For thousands of years, Mr. Mao Dun is a great writer, and this is where he was born and grew up. This is the lecture hall of Lizhi Academy, and the statue in the middle is Mr. Mao Dun, formerly known as Shen Dehong. He was born in Wuzhen on July 4, 1896, and died in Beijing on March 27,1981. Mr. Mao Dun is an outstanding writer and translator in the history of modern literature in China.
He had worked hard for more than 60 years and completed more than 10 million words of works for the motherland. Next to the Lizhi academy is the former residence of Mao Dun. Mr. Mao Dun’s house was purchased by his great-grandfather when he was in business. It covers an area of about 500 square meters, and there is a model of the former residence here. There is a study room next to it, which was renovated by Mao Dun in 1934 with the copymoney of“Midnight”. He created a lot of works here. Outside the study room, it is the patio of Mao Dun's house.
Xizha, much bigger than Dongzha, is also ancient and charming, with beautiful natural scenery and magnificent night views. Famous historic and cultural sites, handicraft workshops, classic exhibition halls, religious buildings, folk customs and leisure places here are so enchanting. Xizha is more fashionable and modern, and supporting facilities such as sightseeing cars, water buses, direct drinking water, natural gas, star-rated toilets and intelligent tourist parking lots are all available.
It truly integrates history and modernity, nature and humanity, environment and technology harmoniously here.Xizha has surpassed the concept of a scenic spot, whether it is sightseeing, leisure, vacation or business activities, this is the best destination. Now ladies and gentlemen, let’s go and explore it.
We are now at Muxin Art Museum. The birth of this building is another legend of Wuzhen. Mr. Muxin, formerly known as Sunpu, pen name Muxin, was born in Dongzha in 1927. He is a famous painter, writer and poet in the United States. In 1994, he quietly returned to his hometown - Wuzhen, but when he saw that his broken ancestral house, he wrote the article “Wuzhen” full of disappointment. Mu Xin said in his poem: I remember that when I was a teenager, everyone sincerely kept his words, but now it seems a very different place.
The Muxin Art Museum building we are seeing now, with a highly modern shape, spans the water surface of Wuzhen Yuanbao Lake. With the reflection in the water, it forms a quiet and clean scenery. The museum is composed of a painting hall, a literature hall, a prison hall and a video hall. For the first time, it completely displays the paintings and literary works of Mr. Mu Xin.
Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you will find the above places interesting and attractive, the water town has also been chosen as the venue for the World Internet Conference. It has attracted tourists as well as IT lovers to the area every year. You may also consider spending one night here in Xizha to admire the beautiful night views that could take you back to a period thousand years back. If you have any question during your trip, please feel free to ask me any time. Thanks for your attention.
