                                  Monkey Business

    A monkey climbed the roof of a house and entertained the people with its antics. The audience gathered below to cheer for its tricks.

     After it had gone, as ass who craved popularity climbed the roof and tried to perform the same tricks from memory.

     In the process, it dislodged and broke several tiles. The owner of the house was furious.

    He ordered his servants to go up in a fury, drive the ass down, and beat it black and blue.

     “What have I done? Why did you beat me?” said the donkey reluctantly.

     “Is the roof a place you can dance?” the servant said and turned back.

       一只猴子嗖嗖地爬上了屋顶，耍着把戏逗弄着人们。观众们聚集在下面为它滑稽的动作欢呼喝彩。

       当猴子走后，一头蠢驴也想着模仿猴子赢得大众喜爱，于是它爬上房顶回忆着猴子的动作并手舞足蹈。

       然而它一不小心打碎了几片瓦，房主看到后非常生气。

       他怒气冲冲地叫他的仆人上来把驴赶下去了，把它打得遍体鳞伤。

      “我做错了什么？为什么要打我？”驴不甘心地问道。

      “那房顶是你能瞎跳的地方吗？”仆人说完扭头就走了。

这个故事说的是适合别人的动作不一定适合你，也就是要学会做自己。Actions that suit others may not suit you. Be yourself.

故事中有一个句子，After it had gone, an ass who craved popularity climbed the roof and tried to perform the same tricks from memory. 这头蠢驴想赢得大众喜爱，句子中用的是crave popularity。 首先popularity是名词“受欢迎，普及，流行”，它的形容词是popular，“受欢迎的”。另外“想要赢得”在句子中并不是我们可能会写到的“want to win”，而是crave这个单词。这个词的意思为having a very strong desire for sth，也就是“渴望”，常见的搭配有crave sth,或者 crave to do sth。所以你看，当我们想表达“想要，want”的时候，其实有些地方可以用“渴望”来代替，比如这里学到的crave，这样一来，你的语言表达就不至于如此单调低级了。我们来看几个例子。

我此刻真的想吃冰激凌了。这个句子你也许第一反应又会是翻译成I really want to eat ice cream now. 这样的句子如果是在写作中，是不是可以词汇更加提升一些呢？所以我们可以翻译为 I do crave ice cream at the moment. 其一，want用crave替换，且用do强调动词；其二，eat根据句意无需翻译，使语言更简洁；其三，now 用词组at the moment替换。这样一来，同样意思的句子，表达是不是好多了呢？

第二个单词是我们在The Sun and the Wind中学到过，fury，是anger的替换词。今天的故事中也出现了这个单词。The owner of the house was furious.这个句子中furious是fury的形容词，也就是angry的意思。 He ordered his servants to go up in a fury. 这个句子中in a fury意思为“生气地”，比如 He dashed out in a fury. 他怒气冲冲地跑出去了。

最后是故事中出现的一个俗语，beat it black and blue，翻译成中文对应得俗语为“打得它鼻青脸肿”。比如，I’m sick and tired of being in goal. Look at these bruises—I’m black and blue all over. 我厌倦了进球。看看这些淤伤，我身上都是青一块紫一块的了。
