[10:11.94]How to Speak Good English
[10:14.06]Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
[10:16.32]Having authentic and polished oral English is every learner’s dream,
[10:20.72]however, many of my students spent a lot of years,
[10:23.69]money and efforts on speaking this language well
[10:27.01]but failed to be able to communicate and speak out,
[10:30.96]the reason for which might be mainly the lack
[10:34.38]of confidence and right methods.
[10:37.46]Many English learners have no courage
[10:39.57]to start a topic and face an awkward silence
[10:42.97]after the initial greeting was given,
[10:45.20]thus the conversation comes to an end.
[10:48.49]Here I would like to give you some advice on how to speak good English.
[10:53.20]There are 3-D methods (Dialogue, Discussion and Debate)
[10:57.89]to improve your eloquence.
[11:00.26]First of all, it’s important to be involved in dialogues.
[11:04.28]I notice that many students do well in speaking
[11:06.82]when conducting a prepared speech or presentation in class.
[11:11.12]But speaking English fluently is not just about making
[11:13.68]presentations and giving speeches.
[11:16.92]It is about expressing your ideas and insight
[11:20.40]on the most mundane of things around you.
[11:23.40]The ability to make dialogues is very important in social communication.
[11:28.39]Topics for casual conversation could include the weather,
[11:32.22]education, music, current affairs, hobbies, travel, etc.
[11:37.42]Do not always ask foreigners
[11:39.91]"what is your name and how is your job"
[11:43.35]when you want to find one to practice your English with.
[11:46.77]Before going to English Corner,
[11:48.74]please read up on your area of interest
[11:51.35]and try framing sentences to express your opinions.
[11:54.99]Talk about it with someone close to you
[11:57.33]or someone whose English level is higher than yours,
[12:01.32]so you can check for your language accuracy and fluency.
[12:05.60]Secondly, discussion and debate play a key role.
[12:09.91]I always enlighten my students that your language ability
[12:13.41]and academic achievements are very important and imperative,
[12:17.91]but the most important of all is your eloquence
[12:20.71]to communicate in the personal relationships.
[12:24.60]Elite may not have eloquence,
[12:26.79]but an eloquent person must be an elite.
[12:29.93]Of course, other methods may work, too.
[12:33.03]Many students do want to improve their English by all means.
[12:36.90]It’s self-evident that all of us like taking down notes
[12:40.16]when we are listening to the lectures given by teachers at school.
[12:44.10]But it’s not a correct way to speak good language.
[12:47.35]Unless you use the language every day,
[12:50.07]you will never know how good you are at it.
[12:53.01]Ask your friends who are good at English for help.
[12:56.48]Try to speak it as much as possible,
[12:59.13]and let them interrupt you whenever you make mistakes
[13:02.17]and ask them to correct you.
[13:04.54]Do not feel embarrassed to make mistakes,
[13:07.38]for that is the only way you will learn.
[13:10.38]Enjoy losing face and enjoy making mistakes
[13:14.12]because that is the way how the process of
[13:16.62]acquiring fluency in a language occurs.
[13:20.15]Then, there are attitudes that count most.
[13:23.53]If you do want to learn something well,
[13:26.03]you are supposed to have confidence and passion.
[13:28.91]And that is why I hope all of you can be confident
[13:32.03]and passionate for what you have done and what you will be doing.
[13:36.51]Finally, I want to say:
[13:38.53]try to be confident and passionate in the journey of study and life;
[13:43.75]all you need is a will to learn and the initiative to begin.
[13:48.70]Now, you have TWO minutes to complete your work.
[15:51.76]THIS IS THE END OF SECTION A TALK.
[15:57.30]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS
[16:00.75]In this section you will hear two conversations.
[16:03.66]At the end of each conversation,
[16:05.47]five questions will be asked about what was said.
[16:08.90]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken ONCE ONLY.
[16:13.43]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.
[16:17.16]During the pause,
[16:18.16]you should read the four choices of A), B), C) and D),
[16:23.47]and mark the best answer to each question on ANSWER SHEET TWO.
[16:28.41]You have thirty seconds to preview the questions.
[17:01.41]Now, listen to the conversations.
[17:04.60]Conversation One
[17:06.69]W: We continue now with something to think about
[17:09.05]as you plan your summer vacation.
[17:11.66]Now a growing group of travelers are finding comfort in
[17:14.66]a full-fledged home away from home.
[17:16.98]And here with more is Travelzoo editor Gabe Saglie.
[17:21.25]Good morning, Gabe.
[17:22.68]M: Good to see you.
[17:24.38]W: I would love to go away and rent a house.
[17:26.88]A lot more people are doing it, so is this a trend?
[17:30.16]M: Well. I love the great hotel,
[17:32.25]and hotels are always going to be the No. 1 choice really for travelers.
[17:37.18]They are convenient,
[17:38.41]easy to book and you know what you are getting.
[17:41.42]But more people are traveling today than ever before,
[17:44.54]for a greater variety of reasons than ever before.
[17:47.97]So vacation rentals offer probably greater options now,
[17:52.23]depending on the kind of the trip that you want to take.
[17:55.55]You're literally renting somebody's home, right?
[17:59.12]W: Yes. You usually think it's going to be more expensive
[18:02.31]automatically than a hotel would be,
[18:04.60]but that's often not the case.
[18:06.48]The only concern that I might raise would be that,
[18:08.72]with a hotel, if you have any problems,
[18:11.38]you go and complain to the management.
[18:13.44]You are going to need that same level of service
[18:15.66]if you have any problems in a rental type situation.
[18:18.87]M:The answer is yes.
[18:20.66]I mean, you needn't worry about that,
[18:22.92]because they can provide the same level of service to you.
[18:26.11]But you have to do a little bit more homework
[18:28.39]on your own to guarantee that.
[18:30.48]After all, you are protecting your investment.
[18:33.96]Do a vacation memo,
[18:35.61]see the reviews by former renters,
[18:38.08]and get a contract before you send any money.
[18:41.28]Use a credit card instead of cash, or money order,
[18:45.28]and make sure you get an array of contract information
[18:48.66]once you are at the vacation rental.
[18:51.75]W: What about a couple's romantic get-away?
[18:54.16]In some cases, you say, that sounds like an ideal.
[18:57.27]M: Yes. My wife and I have spent a large sum
[19:00.18]of money on a hotel in Hawaii.
[19:02.95]But if now we are considering a vacation rental,
[19:06.14]we like making our own breakfast in the morning,
[19:08.72]almost feeling like we get some of the management
[19:11.38]we have at home,
[19:12.64]while traveling thousands of miles away from home.
[19:16.39]W: Do you have any particular locations
[19:18.08]where they are better to rent and do the hotel thing?
[19:22.45]M: Cities like New York,
[19:23.89]San Francisco and
[19:25.08]Chicago have a hotel industry just as good as it can be.
[19:29.53]The hotel is probably the best way to go in those peak seasons.
[19:33.96]In other areas like Florida, Southern California,
[19:37.03]Hawaii and Mexico, vacation rentals could be a great option for you.
[19:42.41]W: Good stuff here. Gabe Sagile,
[19:44.40]good to see you again. Thanks.
[19:46.49]M: See you then.  Happy travels.
[19:49.44]This is the end of Conversation One.
[19:51.90]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.
[19:56.19]1. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of hotels?
[20:11.97]2. What is the advantage of vacation rentals?
[20:27.38]3. Which of the following do you NOT need
[20:30.67]to do to ensure your renting safety?
[20:44.72]4. What is the advantage of choosing vacation rentals
[20:49.27]for couples instead of hotels?
[21:01.83]5. Which of the following is NOT the area
[21:05.72]where vacation rentals are a good option?
[21:19.91]Conversation Two
[21:21.91]M: Eating the right dishes can lift our spirits and swallow up stress.
[21:26.60]Well, here with more on how food affects our mood
[21:29.78]is Doctor Susan Kleiner, a nutritionist,
[21:33.10]and the author of the Good Mood Diet.
[21:35.62]Susan, good morning.
[21:38.54]W: Good morning, Kim Bold.
[21:40.71]M: Are there foods that actually have happy chemicals in them?
[21:44.46]W: Oh, absolutely. You know, how we feel,
[21:47.08]how we cope with stress, how we think,
[21:49.62]how clearly we think are all directly affected by the foods that we eat.
[21:54.06]M: OK. As for me,
[21:56.06]Pizza would be my happy food.
[21:58.46]But those aren't the foods that actually make you happy. Right?
[22:03.38]W: Well, it could be.
[22:05.33]You know, both of those are part of it.
[22:07.36]But there are foods that really directly
[22:08.99]affect our brain with certain chemicals.
[22:11.65]Fish is really a big happy food.
[22:13.99]It's got protein in brain,
[22:15.66]and  it is free of fats and full of vitamin D.
[22:18.81]All of those help raise our neural chemistry
[22:21.34]and that makes us feel happy.
[22:23.28]Potatoes, cereals, great carps actually
[22:26.21]get the protein into the brain.
[22:28.58]Fruits and vegetables,
[22:29.70]milk and dairy products,
[22:31.41]all are great for raising mood.
[22:33.69]And crunchy foods, like popcorn,
[22:35.65]are fabulous for making us feel happy.
[22:38.30]M: OK. Then you got a very happy dinner, right?
[22:42.61]W: Yes.
[22:43.43]M: OK. Let's talk about stressed-out food or foods
[22:47.21]that you do tend to eat when you're stressed.
[22:49.90]People interviewed said that they might prefer anything salty,
[22:53.54]or a piece of chocolate,
[22:55.08]or even some kind of drinks.
[22:57.08]Well, as far as you are concerned,
[22:59.06]what are the real stress busters?
[23:02.10]W: Well.  Healthy fats, believe it or not,
[23:05.16]are great for coping with stress,
[23:06.85]such as nuts, seeds, olive, olive oil and etc.
[23:11.89]A great stress buster: peanuts and peanut butter.
[23:14.81]M: Yes.
[23:16.47]W: And then again,
[23:17.22]dairy foods are great.
[23:18.61]They help reduce stress and decrease anxiety and anger.
[23:21.94]And so again, combinations rich in protein and vitamin B6.
[23:27.53]So lean beef and turkey are good choices.
[23:30.23]Making yourself a turkey sandwich on the whole-grain bread seems a great idea.
[23:34.84]M: OK, our final mood here is energetic.
[23:38.72]How to be energetic?
[23:40.39]People who we interviewed also showed their preference to something with sugar,
[23:44.45]as candy bars or a protein shake.
[23:47.52]OK, now I mean we all do it.
[23:49.83]Sugar, caffeine, you know.
[23:52.23]W: Right.
[23:53.82]M: Are any of those harmful?
[23:55.57]W: Well. There are some good ones there.
[23:57.86]The liquid is really critical.
[23:59.88]M: Keeping yourself hydrated.
[24:02.24]W: There's nothing more important for all of your moods
[24:04.39]than to keep yourself drinking plenty of water.
[24:06.99]But there are other things,
[24:08.25]such as eggs and soy.
[24:10.24]The egg, the egg yolk and soy are fast food fat
[24:13.87]that actually creates channels to allow nutrition
[24:16.64]into the brain and poisonous substances out.
[24:19.34]It's so important to have them in your diet every day.
[24:22.27]And of course, everyone loves chocolate.
[24:24.76]But we can also have coffee,
[24:26.26]tea, a little bit of caffeine.
[24:28.28]They are stimulant.
[24:29.75]M: Right! Dr. Susan Kleiner,
[24:32.28]thank you so much! Good to have you here!
[24:35.34]W: Thank you! Nice to be here!
[24:37.85]This is the end of Conversation Two.
[24:40.19]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.
[24:44.85]6. Which of the following aspects is NOT affected by the foods we eat?
[25:02.60]7. Which of the following foods can both
[25:05.42]make people happy and release stress?
[25:19.59]8. Which of the following foods can NOT help to reduce stress?
[25:36.43]9. Which of the following can be the first
[25:38.97]choice in making us energetic?
[25:51.87]10. Which of the following statements is CORRECT?
