A senior Amazon engineer has quit thecompany in protest over the company "firing whistleblowers".
Tim Bray, a senior principal engineer andvice-president at Amazon Web Services, Amazon's cloud services division, said he"snapped" after the company's response to protests over itsenvironmental policies and warehouse conditions.
In a blog post, Mr Bray said he wasresigning because of retaliation against employees who pushed the company toimprove its environmental practices, and who supported warehouse employeesunhappy with their working conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr Bray said the firing of leaders involvedin both efforts was "designed to create a climate of fear" and thatstaying at the company would have meant "signing off on actions Idespised". He said his departurewould cost him over $1m (£805,000).
Workers originally formed Amazon Employeesfor Climate Justice last year, publishing an open letter calling on thelogistics giant to publish a plan to reach zero emissions and commit to movingaway from fossil fuels. Mr Bray was the only VP-level employee to sign.
The group organised a walkout, promptingAmazon chief executive Jeff Bezos to announce a commitment to meet the Parisclimate goals 10 years early and to get 80pc of its energy from renewablesources by 2024.
Last month the same group organised a videocall in support of warehouse workers trying to improve their safety conditions. Two AECJ leaders were fired soon after, along with several warehouse workers.
"The justifications were laughable; itwas clear to any reasonable observer that they were turfed forwhistleblowing," Mr Bray said.
Last month Amazon said AECJ leaders MarenCosta and Emily Cunningham were fired for “repeatedly violating internalpolicies”, without specifying which policies.
It said warehouse workers Bashir Mohamedand Chris Smalls were fired for "violating social distancingguidelines".
"The warehouse workers are weak andgetting weaker, what with mass unemployment and (in the US) job-linked healthinsurance.
"So they’re gonna get treated likecrap, because capitalism. Any plausible solution has to start with increasingtheir collective strength," Mr Bray said.
