[08:40.17]PART Ⅱ LISTENING COMPREHENSION
[08:43.13]SECTION A TALK
[08:45.86]In this section you will hear a talk.
[08:49.25]You will hear the talk ONCE ONLY.
[08:52.29]While listening,
[08:53.65]you may look at ANSWER SHEET ONE
[08:56.83]and write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each gap.
[09:00.60]Make sure the word(s) you fill in is (are)
[09:05.17]both grammatically and semantically acceptable.
[09:08.85]You may use the blank sheet for note-taking.
[09:12.09]You have THIRTY seconds to preview the gap-filling task.
[09:46.20]Now listen to the talk. When it is over,
[09:49.34]you will be given TWO minutes to complete your work.
[09:54.52]Life Comes in a Package
[09:56.99]Good morning, everyone.
[09:58.66]I’m sure you all have got some deep feelings of life.
[10:02.45]And you may have tried different kinds of descriptions
[10:05.46]of your own life.
[10:07.28]What I want to tell you today is that
[10:09.22]life comes in a package.
[10:11.72]This package includes happiness and sorrow,
[10:15.07]success and failure, hope and despair.
[10:19.21]Life is a learning process.
[10:21.54]Experiences in life teach us new lessons
[10:25.02]and make us a better person.
[10:27.68]With each passing day
[10:29.16]we learn to handle various situations.
[10:32.63]First, let’s talk about love.
[10:35.29]Love plays an important role in our life.
[10:38.66]Love makes you feel wanted.
[10:41.02]Without love a person could become cruel.
[10:44.52]In the early stage of our life,
[10:46.73]our parents are the ones
[10:48.59]who shower us with unconditional love and care.
[10:52.81]They teach us about what is right and wrong,
[10:55.86]good and bad.
[10:57.57]But we always tend to take this for granted.
[11:00.96]It is only after marriage and having kids
[11:03.67]that a person understands
[11:05.63]and becomes sensitive to others’ feelings.
[11:09.58]Kids make a person responsible and mature
[11:12.78]and help us to understand life better.
[11:16.05]Second, do you think you are a happy person?
[11:19.86]Materialistic happiness is short-lived,
[11:23.22]but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others’ face
[11:27.49]gives a certain level of fulfillment.
[11:30.80]Peace of mind is the main link to happiness.
[11:34.10]No mind is happy without peace.
[11:36.80]We realize the true worth of happiness
[11:39.65]when we are in sorrow.
[11:41.47]Sorrow is basically due to death of a loved one,
[11:44.98]failure and despair.
[11:47.04]But these things are temporary
[11:49.14]and will easily pass away.
[11:51.91]Third, I’m sure you all have experienced success
[11:55.63]as well as failure.
[11:57.93]Failure is the path to success.
[12:00.65]It helps us to touch the sky,
[12:02.86]teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way.
[12:07.82]Success brings in money,
[12:09.66]fame, pride and self-respect.
[12:13.17]Here it becomes very important
[12:15.48]to keep our head on our shoulder.
[12:18.05]The only way to show our gratitude to God
[12:20.58]for giving us success
[12:22.39]is by being humble, modest
[12:24.79]and respectful to the less fortunate ones.
[12:28.82]The last I want to share with you
[12:31.12]is about hope and despair.
[12:33.73]Hope is what keeps life going.
[12:36.53]Parents always hope their children do well.
[12:39.96]Hope makes us dream.
[12:42.01]Hope builds in patience.
[12:44.60]Life teaches us not to despair
[12:47.00]even in the darkest hour,
[12:49.26]because after every night there is a day.
[12:52.76]Nothing remains the same.
[12:55.13]We have only one choice:
[12:57.16]keep moving on in life and be hopeful.
[13:00.71]Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday,
[13:04.21]for it has passed and is beyond our control.
[13:08.64]Tomorrow is unknown,
[13:10.45]for it could either be bright or dull.
[13:13.26]So the only alternative is working hard today,
[13:16.87]so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.
[13:19.84]After all of these,
[13:21.40]have you got a totally brand new feeling
[13:23.88]towards your own life?
[13:25.77]Or maybe you will have a different opinion
[13:28.96]about what you have experienced before?
[13:31.50]I do hope that you will understand life better.
[13:34.59]Thank you!
[13:37.18]Now, you have TWO minutes
[13:38.35]to complete your work.
[15:39.97]THIS IS THE END OF SECTION A TALK.
[15:43.88]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS
[15:46.87]In this section you will hear two conversations.
[15:50.83]At the end of each conversation,
[15:53.05]five questions will be asked about what was said.
[15:56.65]Both the conversation and the questions
[15:59.24]will be spoken ONCE ONLY.
[16:02.10]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.
[16:06.84]During the pause,
[16:08.30]you should read the four choices of A), B), C) and D),
[16:12.87]and mark the best answer to each question
[16:15.88]on ANSWER SHEET TWO.
[16:18.54]You have thirty seconds to preview the questions.
[16:51.74]Now, listen to the conversations.
[16:56.18]Conversation One
[16:58.37]M: So, Lisa, you are packing your suitcase.
[17:01.77]Are you going on a trip?
[17:03.57]W: Yes. I’m going to Europe on a business trip.
[17:06.89]M: A business trip?
[17:08.33]How do you feel about taking business trips?
[17:11.31]W: Sometimes I love business.
[17:13.47]I love getting out of the city for, you know,
[17:16.35]three or four days and staying at a nice hotel
[17:20.12]and taking a flight somewhere,
[17:21.93]going to the airport.
[17:23.55]M: So you like to travel?
[17:25.21]W: I love traveling.
[17:26.98]M: You don’t mind staying in different hotels
[17:29.27] and riding on the plane all the time.
[17:32.21]Don’t you get bored?
[17:33.80]W: No, I never get bored.
[17:35.85] I mean, although I don’t always like the whole
[17:38.33]checking in the airport process
[17:40.55] because it takes a lot of time
[17:42.62]and then it’s waiting for the plane.
[17:44.98]But as soon as I’m in the plane and the doors close,
[17:48.18]I love it.
[17:49.56]No one can contact me.
[17:51.63]I can’t contact anyone else, either.
[17:54.42]There are free movies playing and food serves.
[17:57.14]It’s wonderful.
[17:59.08]M: So you kind of like the feel of living in a bubble.
[18:02.80]It’s like a mini-vacation.
[18:04.70]W: Yeah. Often, it’s a lot busier
[18:07.86]when I go on business trips
[18:09.59]than when I’m not on business trips
[18:11.36]in terms of my workload.
[18:13.27]It does feel like a mini-vacation.
[18:16.32]I stay in a nice hotel.
[18:18.08]I get to take taxis everywhere,
[18:20.30]which I love to do. You know,
[18:22.91]we eat at great restaurants
[18:24.69]and we’re meeting with great people
[18:26.42]and doing some important things.
[18:28.79]So I do love the whole aspect of business trip life.
[18:33.05]M: So what do you do to avoid getting bored
[18:35.97]when you’re waiting for the plane?
[18:38.37]W: Well, the first thing I do
[18:39.94]is that I don’t get to the airport too early,
[18:42.44]and I normally go to the duty-free store.
[18:45.75]M: Do you ever buy souvenirs?
[18:47.96]W: I always buy souvenirs for my colleagues
[18:50.69]when I go overseas.
[18:52.19]But lately I’ve been going on a lot of business trips
[18:56.10]and so the novelty of souvenirs has worn off.
[18:59.75]M: I see. Sounds like an exciting lifestyle.
[19:03.18]W: It’s fun. I wouldn’t give it up for anything else.
[19:08.61]This is the end of Conversation One.
[19:11.36]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.
[19:16.67]1. Which is NOT mentioned by the man
[19:20.88]as the disadvantage of travelling?
[19:33.31]2. What does the woman dislike about taking a flight?
[19:48.40]3. What does the woman say about taking business trips?
[20:03.70]4. How does the woman kill time while waiting for the plane?
[20:19.25]5. What does the woman say about buying souvenirs recently?
[20:34.56]Conversation Two
[20:36.76]W: Hey, you seem upset. What’s happening?
[20:39.84]M: Now, Annie, maybe you can help me.
[20:42.47]I teach at a university.
[20:44.50]My students are so devoted to their circles, their clubs.
[20:48.31]Why? To them, it’s more important than classes.
[20:52.96]W: Well, I think it’s because
[20:54.84]they couldn’t have much social life
[20:56.85]until they get into university,
[20:59.36]and finally they have this freedom and now it is there,
[21:03.61]actually, the first and the last chance
[21:05.74]to have fun with their friends
[21:07.31]because four years later they have to start working.
[21:11.14]So I think they are trying to get the most
[21:13.45]out of their school years.
[21:15.44]M: So, when you were at university,
[21:18.20]was your circle or club more important to you
[21:21.19]than your actual studies?
[21:23.26]W: No, actually I was a bit different
[21:25.78]because I always heard about
[21:27.54]how students don’t study hard in university,
[21:30.77]so I said to myself-OK, I won’t be like that.
[21:34.73]M: Oh, wow, that’s very admirable.
[21:37.41]W: But I was also one of the university organizers.
[21:40.83]I was a member of that.
[21:42.78]I had done that for two years
[21:44.55]but also I tried to study as much as I could
[21:48.18]and did my thesis, my graduation thesis.
[21:51.44]It was very strange
[21:52.64]because a lot of my friends told me
[21:54.57]their graduation thesis was about 20 pages long
[21:57.80]and they just finished it in two weeks.
[22:00.66]M: Man!
[22:02.00]W: And my professor didn’t allow us to do that
[22:04.50]so we had to spend two years on the research.
[22:08.17]We had to write at least a hundred pages,
[22:11.46]so I learned quite a lot from that program
[22:14.24]and I was glad that
[22:15.08] I could balance out my university life
[22:17.17]between fun and study.
[22:19.99]M: One thing that shocked me at university
[22:22.48] is that a lot of times kids sleep in class,
[22:25.50]or they read books.
[22:27.24]They don’t even listen to the professor
[22:29.18]and the professor doesn’t look upset.
[22:31.52]W: Yeah, it’s true.
[22:33.27]M: Why? Like, how come the professor doesn’t get mad?
[22:37.48]W: I think they understand
[22:38.79]what the students have come through.
[22:40.79]They know their situation
[22:42.23]when they came to university.
[22:44.26]“Ah, yeah, let them have fun.”
[22:46.78]And if they can still pass the class
[22:48.80]as long as they are in the class,
[22:50.95]they don’t have to do much work
[22:52.39]and even for the exams
[22:53.91]they can just pass around the notes,
[22:56.34]and somebody who ever took the notes,
[22:58.41]studied in the last two days,
[23:00.07]and they can just pass the class.
[23:02.48]M: I guess that’s a good way to look at it.
[23:05.03]I guess that
[23:05.85]they still have to be responsible for the work in the end.
[23:09.49]W: You are right.
[23:11.32]This is the end of Conversation Two.
[23:14.13]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.
[23:18.86]6. According to the woman, [23:21.56]why are university students devoted to clubs?
[23:35.28]7. What do we know about the woman’s university life?
[23:50.19]8. What does the woman say about her graduation thesis?
[24:04.96]9. What does the man feel shocked about?
[24:19.15]10. What does the woman say about professors?
