One morning, Linda found an elephant in her room.
"Look!" she called. "There's an elephant in my room!"
"No there isn't," her mother called back.
"Elephants don't live in houses.
Everybody knows that."
The elephant yawned.
一天早上，琳达在她的房间里发现了一头大象。
“看!” 她叫道。“我的房间里有一头大象!”
“不，没有。” 她母亲回答道。

At breakfast, Linda's dad asked her to pass the milk.
"I can't," said Linda. "The elephant drank it all."
"There isn't an elephant," said her dad.
"Elephants don't live in the city.
Everybody knows that."
The elephant burped.
早饭时，琳达的爸爸让她把牛奶递过去。
“我做不到，” 琳达说。“大象全部喝光了。”
“没有大象，” 她爸爸说。
“大象不住在城市里。
每个人都知道的。”
大象打了个嗝。
At school, the teacher grumbled,
"What's wrong with this chalkboard? It's all wrinkly!"
"That's not the chalkboard. That's my elephant!" said Linda.
"There are no elephants at school," said the teacher.
"Everybody knows that."
The elephant ate the teacher's sandwiches.
在学校，老师抱怨道，
“这块黑板怎么了? 都是皱纹!”
“那不是黑板。那是我的大象!” 琳达说。
“学校里没有大象，” 老师说。

At break-time, the elephant followed Linda
to the playground.
He knocked over the swings by mistake.
"Go away!" said Linda. "You're not real and you shouldn't be here!
Everybody knows that!"
The elephant drooped. He walked away,
wiping his eyes with his trunk.
课间休息时，大象跟在琳达后面
到了操场上。
他不小心打翻了秋千。
“走开!” 琳达说。“你不是真的，你不应该在这里!”

大象垂下头来。他走开了,
用鼻子擦着眼睛。
After school, Linda couldn't see the elephant anywhere.
"Elephant!" she called. "Where are you?"
放学后，琳达到处都看不到大象。

Linda went home without him.
She felt lonely.
So she went outside, and sat on the steps,
and waited.
And waited.
And waited.
琳达独自回家了。
她感到孤独。
于是她走了出去，坐在台阶上，

And then... she saw a trunk.
And tusks.
And ears.
The elephant was coming down the road!
然后……她看到了一个大象鼻子。
和象牙。

She ran up and hugged him.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't mean it!
I know you're real. You're my elephant."
她跑过去拥抱他。
“对不起，” 她说。“我不是故意的!”

The elephant lifted her up and put her on his back,
and she rode down the street.
She waved to her neighbours.
"Hello, Mr Green! Hello, Mrs Green!"
"Look at Linda!" said Mr Green. "How did she get up there?
Maybe she grew!"
"Don't be silly," said Mrs Green.
"Little girls don't grow that high. Everybody knows that."
大象把她举起来，把她放在背上，
她骑着大象沿街而下。
她向邻居们挥手。
“你好,格林先生! 你好,格林夫人!”
“看琳达!” 格林先生说。“她是怎么上去的?”
也许她长高了!”
“别傻了，” 格林夫人说。
“小女孩不会长那么高。每个人都知道的。”
The elephant took Linda to the lake,
and she slid down his trunk like it was a slide.
"Wheeeee!" she shrieked.
They played all afternoon laughing
and splashing and spraying each other
with water.
大象把琳达带到湖边，
她从他的鼻子上滑下来，就像滑滑梯一样。
“哇!” 她尖叫起来。
他们玩了一下午笑着，
用水洒着，溅着彼此。
That night, the elephant tucked her into bed.
"Good night, Elephant," said Linda.
"Thank you for a lovely day."
He patted her head, and curled up to sleep
outside her window.
那天晚上，大象把她放进了被窝。
“晚安，大象，” 琳达说。
“谢谢你让我度过了美好的一天。”
他拍拍她的头，蜷着身子睡着了
在她的窗口外。
"Elephants are the best friends in the world,"
Linda said to herself. "Nobody knows that,
except for me and my elephant."
