Good morning,Ladies and Gentlemen,Welcome to Zhoushan!There are all together 1390 islands in Zhoushan.It covers a total area of 22,200 square kilometers and has a population of 1.14 million.
Zhoushan is located in the north-east part of Zhejiang Province with East China Sea to the east,Hangzhou Bay to the west and borders Shanghai to the North.
If we compare the Yangtze River to a dragon,shanghai definitely is its head,while Zhoushan is like a shining pearl on the dragon’s head.
Zhoushan is a city with a long history.Studies show that,around 5000 years ago,there were people living here.The new Zhoushan city we are visiting now was established in January 1987.
The climate of Zhoushan is pleasant all year round.In summer,it is not extremely hot and in winter, it is not extremely cold.Narcissus is the city flower of Zhoushan and the city trees of Zhoushan are Neolitsea and camphor.
Blue sky,clear water,sand beaches,Buddhism and sea food are the special features of Zhoushan’s tourism.The famous scenic spots are:Mountain Putuo,Shengsi Islands, Daishan,Zhujiajian and so on.
In China,there are four Great Buddhist Mountains.They are:Mountain Wutai in Shanxi,the holy place of Wenshu;Mountain Emei in Sichuan,the holy place for Puxian; Mountain Jiuhua in Anhui,the holy place for Dizang and the last one is Mountain Putuo in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province,the holy place for Guanyin.
Mountain Putuo is located in the east of Zhoushan Islands and to the north of Hangzhou Bay.
Putuo,means a beautiful white flower.It covers an area of 12.5 square kilometers.
Recently Mountain Putuo became more and more popular,it was regarded as one of “the Most Beautiful Islands”,one of “the Best Ten Leisure Resorts” in China.In 2006, Mountain Putuo was the host place of the First World Forum of Buddhism.
Ladies and Gentlemen, now we have come to the largest,the best preserved and the most important temple in Mountain Putuo.It is called Puji Temple. And today we are going to visit the two main halls on the central axis they are namely the Heavenly Guardians Hall (or the Heavenly King’s hall) and Yuan Tong Bao Dian (or the Perfection Hall).
Now,first let's pay a visit to the Heavenly King’s Hall.In this hall,Maitreya Buddha, Skanda and Four Heavenly kings are worshiped.
Ladies and Gentlemen,as we can see,Maitreya Buddha has a big belly and is laughing from ear to ear.Because he is holding a cloth bag,he is well-known as Buddha with a cloth bag in China, meanwhile the western travelers prefer to call him “laughing Buddha” or “Happy Buddha”. When Sakyamuni passed away, he became the successor, so he is also called future Buddha. He teaches us the wisdom of life: if one is tolerant, easy to be satisfied, his or her life will be long and healthy.The couplet on the posts reads: tolerate the intolerable under the heaven and laugh to the laughable in the world. It advises us to be generous, optimistic and happy.
Now please take a look at the four heavenly kings.The king of the east holds a pipa. He upholds the kingdom and is in charge of harmony;the king of the south holds a sword,he causes to grow and is in charge of wind.The king of the west holds a snake. He sees everything and is in charge of peace;and the king of the north holds an umbrella.He hears everything and is in charge of rain.
Ladies and gentlemen,in front of us we can see Yuan Tong Bao Dian or the Perfection Hall.What does Yuan Tong mean?It is believed that Guanyin has very special ears which are connected with her eyes.When she hears somebody calling her for help,she will see that person and offer help right away.So Guanyin is also known as Yuan Tong or Perfection.It is 18 meters high, 42 meters wide and 24 meters long.It covers an area of over 2000 square meters.In the center of the hall,we can see a statue of Guanyin.It is 8.8 meters high.She wears a crown and sits on a lotus.She holds a lotus flower in her right hand and shows a Gesture of Protection with the left hand.
Standing beside her are Red Boy and the daughter of the Dragon king.On both sides, there are all together 32 incarnations of Guanyin,to meet the different needs of people in different situations.
Ladies and Gentlemen,if you are familiar with the novel “Journey to the West”,you must know that the Purple Bamboo Grove is the residence of Guanyin.Whenever the Monkey King met some troubles,he would come here and ask for Guanyin's help.As shown in its name,the Purple Bamboo Grove area now has more than 3000 purple bamboos here.
Ladies and gentlemen,now we have come to the famous Unwilling- to-go Guanyin Temple.This small temple is the Mecca of Putuo because it is the cradle of Buddhism on this island.In 863,a Japanese monk Hui E came to China and got a statue of Guanyin from Mountain Wutai.He planned to bring it home,however when his boat reached here,he was stopped by a thunderstorm.He prayed:if the people in my country don't have the luck to see the Buddha,show me the direction and I will build a temple for him.Soon the storm stopped,so he left the statue here and later a temple was built.
Dear Guests,now please take a look at the statue.The total height is 33 meters.The number 33 indicates the 33 images of Guanyin.The statue is 20 meters high and is made up of 96 huge pieces of bronze.Each piece is one centimeter thick and weighs 1 ton. Now the statue has become a landmark of this holy Buddhist World and enjoys a value of both culture and art as well.On Sep 29,1997,the consecration ceremony of the Guanyin Statue was held there.
In the morning,it was cloudy and seemed about to rain.But the surprising thing is that,at the moment when Master Miaoshan declared the start of the opening ceremony, the sky suddenly cleared up and from behind the clouds the sun shone on the statue.In the light,an image of Guanyin appeared for quite a few minutes.All the Buddhists here saw the image and started to worship.
